June 25th, 2010- Last Blog of Grade 7

Whew, this grade 7 year has been a very memorable and fun year. It has definitely blown me away. I never thought Grade 7 would be like this, tough, hard, but also fun, and amazing. In Grade 7, it is tough to get an A and you really have to work hard to get one, but you will always be having fun while doing the work. The field trips that we’ve been on have been more fun than ever! The ropes course in UBC, the trip to the aquarium, Playland, kayak and hike on Bowen Island and the end of year school hike, these field trips are definitely memories that will be in my head forever. Having the opportunity to attend some Paralympic events was also fantastic, sledge hockey game between Italy and Sweden, and wheelchair curling. We also did a lot of awesome projects throughout the year. For example, masks, digital story, and Lit Circles. I really enjoyed Lit Circles because I got a chance to read a book that I turned out to really like. It was about racism and the blacks getting excluded and treated horribly, it was horrifying reading about it. Now that we are graduating, it makes me realize how much I’m going to miss this school, how much I love it, and how much I don’t want to leave it. Ridgeview Elementary School is the best elementary school ever and once you’ve been a part of it, you wouldn’t want to be apart from it. This school also gets lots of opportunities and utilities that other schools do not get. For example, this school provides laptops so other students can use the internet when a class already took over the computer lab. We also get to go on lots of field trips that other schools don’t get to go on and experience. The Paralympics events is one example. This school is literally the best school every and anyone would be lucky to attend it, and I do mean that. No matter how awesome everyone says high school is, I don’t want to leave this school but eveyrone has to move on, and that means I do too. Get ready for the waterworks at Grad!

High School Visit
May 14, 2010 by yvonnelri01
This monday our whole grade went up to West Van High to take a tour of the high school. We got some grade 8′s that were graduates from Ridgeview to show us around the school. My buddy was Allison Couchman, but I was also with Amanda Fox because she had her two buddies Nicola and Lucy and they just paired up with each other to make things easier. At the high school, I saw my brother’s friend Dave and Gordon. It was really awkward because Gordon saw me and he just stared/glared at me when I walked by and Dave actually waved at me. My brother is in grade 11 and he said he saw me walk by but thank God I didn’t see him. We also visited net tech which is all about internet safety and things like that. I saw some other grade 8′s that I knew there too. At the cafeteria, I bought a burger and a drink. Surprisingly, the burger was actually really good and for a pretty good price. After the tour, Allison took me to the class she was supposed to be in at that time, which was Mr. Keary’s grade 8 math class. I saw lots of people there that I knew, Danny, Eduardo, Elisse, Gina, Jason, Tommy, Mikey, Alice and lots of others. The math they were doing were actually pretty easy for me. Mr. Keary wrote a question on the board for JK to answer. It was something like 3x(2x+4x)+20-9x= and the answer is 9x+20. I really like Mr. Keary because I think he is a really cool teacher. For example, everyone was talking and he said “Anyone who’s talking is in love with me.” and then everyone stops talking, that is except for Gina. Also, when Mr. Keary asked Mikey for an answer and Mikey gets it wrong, he says, “Mikey you’re an idiot.” I think he’s a really funny teacher and I would love to have him as a teacher when I’m in grade 8. All the grade 8′s say that Mr. Keary is one of the coolest teachers that you can get and I think I can see why. The high school is very big and I’m scared that I’m going to definitely get lost the first week of school, but I’m sure I’ll get used to where everything is and where all my classes are. I think I will definitely get used to high school and enjoy my time there.

This week we added more onto our dance. I think my group is doing very well on our dance because some other groups are not cooperating and our dance is supposed to be done by next friday. We are about 2 minutes into our dance and we want to finish the whole song but we won’t have enough time to choreograph everything so we’re just going to do about 1 minute more of our dance. Even though Becca is not here today, our group still got to add more ideas to our dance, which is great because I remember the first class we got to work on our dance our group had nothing done when Mr. Beck asked us to show him our dance. And now we are one of the groups that have done a lot of our dance. I also really like this dance thing because we get to go in two groups which gives us a chance to be with people that are not in our class. In science, we did a PH levels experiment which I thought was really fun because we got to see what a bunch of drinks are either neutral, acidic or base. In LA we are starting a different unit on grammar. Today we did a little quiz on common nouns, pronouns, proper nouns and antecedents. I did pretty well, I got 9 our of 10. I am enjoying the new things that we are doing and I hope we keep on doing new units that I enjoy.

This week we started dance in PE. We started dance in PE last week already but this week we get to choose our own groups and choreograph our own dances. For our groups the minimum of people is 2 people to 6 people. My group is Henry, Josh, Rex, Ethan, Becca and me. I really like my group because we all cooperate with each other very well, but sometimes we do get off track but we get on track right away. We are dancing to the song Clumsy by Fergie. Also, we have to prepare for two different presentations, one is French, and the other is Socials. For french we have written down sentences about our family members and we have to either write them in a book, a powerpoint, or a poster to present it in front of the whole class. I am going to use a powerpoint to present it. I think it is easier to work on powerpoint because it is easier to type, and the computer does spelling check for you. Also, we have to have pictures of everyone in our family that we’re writing about, and I have the pictures loaded in my computer so I think it’s easier to just upload it onto my powerpoint instead of printing it out and gluing onto the poster or drawing them out. For socials, we are doing a persuasive presentation against someone else. I am against Rex. My topic is why schools shouldn’t be separated by gender, and Rex’s topic is why schools should be separated by gender. After we have done our presentations, our classmates have to vote on who’s presentation they liked better and which one they agree with. Rex is kind of scared because he thinks I will do very well on my presentation so he thinks he’s going to fail. Also, on April 17th, my band in the West Van Youth Band did a concert, which is our biggest fundraiser of the year. It goes from 8:00PM to about 12:00 or 12:30AM. The event is called Big Band Cabaret. I love performing in Big Band Cabaret because there’s always music playing even when I’m not performing. I get to hang out with my band friends, which I hardly get to hang out with. I had a really fun week and I really look forward to finishing our dance.

What I liked the most about this week is that we did gymnastics in PE!!!! It is a lot of fun. We have to go on the volt, springboard, roll down the cheese, do cartwheels on mats and do handstands on mats. What I liked the most is the springboard. I liked doing the straddle, pike, tuck and the star on the springboard. I also like doing front rolls on the springboard. This week I also really enjoyed going to hip hop because we’re starting to do fun moves and flips and all that. I like the moves our teacher added on to our dance. I think it’s fun but some parts of it I still don’t really get the timing and stuff to it.

This week was the first week of school since the Olympic break. On tuesday, the vice principal of West Van High came to our school to tell us about high school and what it’s going to be like there and the classes we’ll be taking and all sorts of things happening in high school. High school sounds like a whole lot of fun to me but it is still very scary, knowing we’ll be there with a bunch of big kids that are way older. At hip hop this week, I thought it was really fun because we learned that we have to do flips. I am going to get flipped by Cleone by doing a handstand and leaning against her and she’ll have to grab my ankles and flip me over. It is a lot of fun and we’ve practiced it at least a thousand times now. Haha.
I love hip hop because I think it is a lot of fun and we get to do different sorts of things. School has been okay so far and I am looking forward to the Paralympic games we are going to watch and high school.

This week on Thursday, my friends and I went to our weekly hip hop class. This dance class, we added a lot of cool dance moves. For example, the guys had to bend down and the girls have to lean over on them. And then the guys have to drop down all the way onto the ground, and the girls would have to drop over them with their butts up horizontally. Then there is this part which is reallycool but really difficult to do, the girls have to do the worm and kick their legs really high while the guys roll under their legs. If the girls don’t kick their legs up high, they guys will get crushed because the girls’ legs would land and hit them. That is very difficult to do because some of the girls(including me) can’t really do the worm yet, so we are still working on that part. We also started working on our Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Wiki website. We are all in groups of three and I’m with my two good friends Becca and Cleone. The page that we are working on is the Cross Country Skiing page. We have to organize the page so it has text, pictures with citation, movie maker or powerpoint about Cross Country Skiing, podcasts of the text in different languages, and links. For the podcasts, we are doing English, Chinese, French and maybe German. Cleone is going to be doing the English podcast, I am going to be doing the Chinese podcast, and our friend Megan is going to be doing the French podcast. We might be doing a German podcast but we’re not sure because Cleone has a friend that speaks German fluently but we’re not sure if he would want to do it for us. This week was really fun especially the dance part because I really like dancing and this week we learned some difficult and cool moves.

This week was the first week of school after winter break. Everything went back to normal at school and everyone was excited and happy to see each other. Today, we went curling! I was in a group with all my friends. We learned how to push the rock. I didn’t know that the rock would be 45 pounds, which is about half my weight. We also evaluated this wiki website that the grade 7′s from last year made. We are evaluating it but we are also going to add more information onto it since this year is the Olympics. We also drew Olympic Rings and drew a winter Olympic sport in each of the circles and coloured the picture in black. After, we coloured in the circle with pencil crayons the colour of the rings. Which are blue, black, red, yellow and green. Then, we write the olympic motto which is citius, altius, fotius. It means swifter, higher, stronger. This week we also received calculator rulers which are rulers but with a calculator on it. Which is really cool because you get to draw straight lines at tye same time as use a calculator in math. We received these rulers from the same people that made our grad sweaters so the rulers had the words class of 2010 on it. I think it was really nice of them to give us the rulers because they are really cool and we can look at the rulers one day and it’ll bring back a lot of memories. For winter break I didn’t go anywhere. I just stayed home and hung out with my friends everyday. For New Years Eve, I went to a dinner party with my family and friends. The people that went are all really good friends with me and I’ve known all of them since I was in grade 2. Which was the first year I came to Canada. They were the first people our family knew. For Christmas, I got 40 dollars, pajamas from La Senza, Purple Uggs and lots of chocolate. I’ve wanted the purple UGGs for a long time because I heard they were really comfy but they were too expensive so my mom didn’t get them for me. But then they were on sale so we got them cheaper than usual. I also love the colour purple and not a lot of other people had the colour purple so I thought I would be unique. The pajamas I got from La Senza are really comfy so I wear them to sleep everyday. I also LOVE chocolate so my parents got me a lot. My dad also got 2 huge bars of chocolate that weighs 1 kg each bar. As you can probably tell, my dad loves chocolates too. I had a great winter break but I also missed school so I am very glad to be back so I can see my teachers and my friends.

Christmas Spirit
December 4, 2009 by yvonnelri01
Today at school we made Christmas crackers for our sister school, Grandview and also Queen Mary. It is also going to the harvest project and also the UGM. We made the crackers with grade 4′s and also grade 2′s. In the afternoon, we made them with our kindergarten buddies because they are the afternoon class, so we couldn’t make it with them in the morning. We mae them with toilet paper rolls and stuff it with candies and wrap it up with wrapping paper. Then, we use ribbons to tie the two ends so it looks like crackers. We can also curl the ribbons if we want. People bring in their candies from Halloween that they got from trick-or-treating.
This week was a fun week. The girls had their basketball jamboree on tuesday and the boys had their jamboree on wedesnday. On tuesday, we did a good job except for the Caulfield game because we lost 15-0. We did horrible in that game. At the end we placed third. But to think of it, we did a great job this season. We won 7 games out of our 9 games. The boys did a really good job. They got into the finals and played against West Bay. Even though they didn’t win, it was a close game and they did an excellent job. They lost by three points, so it was a really close game. I am very proud of the girls team and the boys team for playing an awesome season!!

Weekly Post Nov.20
November 20, 2009 by yvonnelri01
Today, we had to be silent the whole day at school today because of something called Silent Day. We are participating in Silent Day because some children around the world have no right or freedom to say whatever they want and express themselves or their feelings. At this day, we are not allowed to talk, Facebook, text, e-mail, phone, or use MSN. This is to know what it feels like without the freedom of speech. It was really hard for me because I love talking and socializing with my friends. It is especially very hard to not talk during lunch and recess, because usually that’s when we get to talk about whatever we want with our friends and socialize. The girls also had a basketball practice in the morning today and it is really hard not to talk in basketball, because if you want to pass to someone, you might want to call out their name. Some people even came with tape on their mouths to make sure they dont talk. There are six blocks in a day. First block is from 12 AM-8:45 AM. Second block is 8:45 AM-10:20 AM. Third block is 10:20 AM-10:40 AM. Fourth block is 10:40 AM-12 PM. Fifth block is 12 PM-1 PM. Sixth block is 1 PM- 3 PM. And the last block is 3 PM-12 AM. You get to decide if you want to participate in the afterschool one which is the last block, or the morning one which is the first block. I chose the morning one, but not the afterschool one because that one is too hard for me. We have to do the ones during school time. Each block you have to get someone to sponsor you, meaning after every block you get a person to sign it meaning you’ve been silent that block. You also have to get people to pledge you, so maybe if you get your mom to pledge 5 dollars each block, and you’ve been silent for 6 blocks, you get 30 dollars. That money is not for you, it goes to the water pumps we are trying to buy for the African children that can’t use clean water. Our goal is to raise enough money to get 2 water pumps by June 2010. I got my mom to pledge 5 dollars each block and I am pledging 1 dollar for each block. Today has been very interesting because I have not gone one day without talking in my life before.
